Trade Show vs Factory-Direct
Fairs are excellent for discovery — you handle samples, compare dozens of suppliers in a day, and meet people face to face. The downside: booth staff are often sales agents, and many "manufacturers" at fairs are actually trading companies. Factory-direct (visiting or video-touring the plant) gives better pricing and accountability, but you need to know who to contact first.
How to Tell a Factory from a Trading Company
- Ask for a live video tour of the production floor — traders can't show one
- Ask which processes are in-house vs outsourced
- Request their own test reports and certifications, not generic ones
- Check for consistent product families (a real factory specializes)
What to Bring to a Sourcing Meeting
Whether at a fair or contacting a factory directly, come with: target product reference, quantity, your market's certification requirements, artwork (even rough), and target landed price. The more specific you are, the faster and more accurate your quote.
