Why Certifications Matter More Than Just Customs Clearance

A stainless steel water bottle can clear customs in most countries without food contact material test reports. It's labeled as a drinkware item, it goes through general merchandise inspection. You pay your duties, the cartons arrive, you're happy.

Then your retail buyer asks for the FDA test report. Or Amazon flags your listing for missing Prop 65 compliance. Or a customer in Germany returns the product and their consumer protection office contacts your distributor.

At that point, 'we didn't know we needed it' isn't a useful answer. The certifications that matter most aren't required for customs — they're required for the sales channel you're targeting.

USA Requirements: FDA and Prop 65

For the US market, two certifications matter:

FDA 21 CFR: Tests for extractable metals including chromium from stainless steel, migration of any plastic components, and overall food contact safety. Required by most major US retailers (Walmart, Target, Hallmark) and by Amazon US for drinkware listings. Our report reference: SZ2022091339-1E.

California Proposition 65: Tests for lead (Pb), cadmium (Cd), and phthalates. California law requires a specific warning label if the product doesn't test below threshold levels. EU Requirements: LFGB and EU Regulation 1935/2004

For the European Union market:

German LFGB Section 30: Tests extractable heavy metals from stainless steel in food simulant solutions. The primary test German importers and Amazon.de sellers need. Our report reference: SZ2021120041-1E.

UK, Australia, Canada Post-Brexit

UK: UK Food Safety and Hygiene Regulations equivalent to EU Reg 1935/2004. Most UK importers accept our EU certification. For retail chains (Tesco, Sainsbury's, Asda) — check with your buyer's vendor compliance team.

Australia: Food Standards Australia New Zealand (FSANZ) covers food contact materials. Our EU certification is accepted by most Australian importers as sufficient documentation.

Canada: Health Canada requirements similar to FDA. Our FDA documentation accepted by most Canadian importers and retailers.
