Shipping drinkware from China: terms, routes and real costs

Small orders can cost more to ship per piece, and some urgent or low-volume shipments need express courier. If you already have a forwarder, we can also quote the factory price plus delivery to your nominated warehouse in China. The right choice depends on your quantity, destination, timing and who will handle customs.

One shipment, a few clear handover points

A written handover point helps your team, our team and the forwarder work from the same plan. Delivery to a China warehouse can be quoted separately; the export and international shipping responsibilities still need to be assigned clearly.

Why a small order can cost more per piece to deliver

Some freight and handling charges apply to a shipment or booking, not to each bottle. With fewer pieces sharing those costs, the freight per piece can be higher. A small or time-sensitive shipment may need express service, which can add further cost when the cartons are bulky.

If demand and storage allow, compare a few larger quantities as well as the smallest workable order. More pieces may spread fixed charges across the order, but they increase the total purchase and may change cartons, duties, storage and delivery cost. We’ll help compare the actual options rather than assume one quantity is always cheaper.

For the 29 confirmed models, in-stock colours can be mixed to reach 500 pieces for that model; a fully custom Pantone colour starts at 1,000 pieces per colour. Please confirm the rule for your selected model before ordering.

EXW, FCA, FOB and DDP in plain language

Always name the exact place or port and the Incoterms® 2020 rule in the quotation or contract. The term sets responsibilities and risk handover; it does not by itself set payment, ownership or the full service scope.

TermWhere handover happensWhat the seller generally handlesWhat the buyer generally handlesOften considered when…
EXWGoods made available at the named placePrepare goods for collectionLoading, export, main transport, import clearance and deliveryYour agent collects and coordinates the China-side process. Seller loading/export duties need particular care.
FCAAt the seller’s premises or another named place, handed to the buyer’s carrierLoad at own premises when delivery is there; clear exportMain transport, import clearance and destination deliveryA forwarder collects, especially for containers or multimodal transport.
FOBGoods placed on board the buyer-nominated vessel at the named portDeliver on board and clear exportMain sea freight, import clearance, duties and destination deliverySea or inland-waterway cargo handed over on board. For container freight, ask whether FCA fits better.
DDPAt the named destination, import-cleared and ready for unloadingArrange delivery, export/import clearance, duties and taxes under the agreed scopeReceive and unload unless agreed otherwiseYou want one quoted delivery scope. Destination availability and the seller’s ability to import must be checked first.

Warehouse delivery in China: a separately quoted factory-to-warehouse delivery can be useful when your own forwarder consolidates several suppliers. It is not automatically the same as EXW. Confirm in writing the domestic delivery charge, the person responsible for export declaration and the point when the forwarder takes custody.

ICC’s Incoterms® checklist explains the named handover points and why FCA may suit container or multimodal cargo. Read the ICC checklist.

Express, air or sea freight?

These are planning trade-offs, not fixed delivery promises. Ask for the packed dimensions, chargeable weight, quoted route, destination charges and estimated schedule before choosing.

Express courier

Useful for: samples, urgent parcels and smaller shipments.

Trade-off: convenient tracking and door delivery, but often a higher per-piece cost; dimensional weight may apply.

Air freight

Useful for: cartons or pallets when timing matters and courier pricing is high.

Trade-off: airport handling, customs brokerage and final delivery may be separate; compare the full door-to-door total.

Sea LCL

Useful for: orders that need sea freight but do not fill a container.

Trade-off: shared space can help with volume, while minimums and origin/destination handling can make very small loads costly.

Sea FCL

Useful for: a shipment large enough to use a dedicated container.

Trade-off: compare container, port, trucking, clearance and unloading costs; an under-filled container may not be economical.

A forwarder can compare services for your destination. Transit time, acceptance, fees and clearance steps depend on the carrier, route, season and shipment details.

Export and import: the practical sequence

Confirm goods and packing

Agree model, quantity, carton count, outer dimensions, gross weight, labels and delivery plan.

Confirm the trade term

Name the handover place, carrier booking party, exporter, importer and cost items included or excluded.

Prepare export information

Exporter or broker checks the invoice, packing list, declaration data and any route-specific requirements.

Clear import and deliver

Importer or local broker files the destination entry, handles requests or inspection, and arranges taxes and final delivery.

Since 1998, we have worked through branded and export orders. Your contact helps keep the selected model, approved packing, carton marks and receiving requirements together, then checks unclear points with you before the forwarder books the shipment.

Commonly requested documents

Commercial invoice · packing list · transport document or courier waybill · accurate goods description, value and origin · any destination-specific permits or product documents. The exact list depends on the product and market; ask the exporter and your customs broker to verify it before dispatch.

For battery-powered items, check the current airline/carrier rules before booking. The IATA 2026 battery guidance describes additional requirements for lithium and sodium-ion batteries. For courier chargeable weight, see DHL’s Singapore volumetric-weight guide; the divisor may vary by service.

12 practical logistics questions

If your destination, order size or forwarding plan is unusual, send the details and we can help identify what needs confirming.

Why can freight cost so much on a small order?

A small shipment may still carry pickup, export-document, handling and minimum freight charges. Some very small or urgent consignments need express courier, whose chargeable weight can make the freight cost per piece high. We can compare available options for your destination and order; the best route depends on packed dimensions, timing and local delivery.

Would ordering more reduce my shipping cost per piece?

It can. Some shipment and handling costs are fixed or spread across the consignment, so a larger order may lower freight per piece. The total amount paid will still rise, and cartons, storage, demand and import charges also matter. If your demand and storage allow, we recommend comparing the landed cost at a few practical quantities before deciding. For the 29 confirmed models, in-stock colours can be mixed to reach 500 pieces for that model; a custom Pantone colour starts at 1,000 pieces per colour. Please confirm the rule for your selected model.

Can you deliver to my nominated warehouse in China?

We can quote the factory price plus domestic delivery to a named China warehouse as a separate arrangement, subject to the address, receiving hours, booking and handling requirements. Your nominated forwarder can then arrange consolidation and the international leg. Before dispatch, confirm in writing who handles export declaration, warehouse receipt, cargo handover and any extra fees. Delivery to that warehouse is not automatically an EXW or FOB sale.

What do EXW, FCA, FOB and DDP mean?

EXW makes the goods available at the named place; the buyer arranges collection and export formalities, and the seller is not generally responsible for loading. FCA is often a better fit when the seller loads or delivers to a carrier and clears export. FOB is for sea or inland-waterway transport: the seller clears export and delivers the goods on board the named vessel; risk transfers there. DDP means the seller delivers to the named destination after import clearance, with duties and taxes arranged by the seller. The named place, scope and local ability to import must be confirmed in the contract. For container or multimodal cargo, ask whether FCA is more suitable than FOB.

Which shipping method should I compare?

Express courier is convenient for samples, urgent or small shipments, with door-to-door tracking, but can be expensive per piece and may bill by volume. Air freight can suit time-sensitive cartons or pallets when express is too costly, though airport handling and destination delivery are separate items to check. Sea LCL shares container space and can suit larger orders that do not fill a container, but origin, destination and handling fees can weigh heavily on a small consignment. FCL gives one container to the shipment and may make sense when volume and route fit, but compare container, port, trucking and clearance costs. Actual transit and price depend on the route and quote.

How do I estimate carton CBM and courier volumetric weight?

For carton volume, multiply the outer length × width × height in metres, then multiply by the number of cartons: that is the shipment CBM before any carrier adjustments. For DHL Express as a reference, measure each closed parcel in centimetres and calculate L × W × H ÷ 5,000 for volumetric kg; the higher of actual and volumetric weight is generally used for chargeable weight. Other carriers and services may use a different divisor, rounding rule or per-piece method, so use the forwarder’s confirmed packing list and rate rules.

What documents are commonly needed for China export?

Depending on the product, transaction and route, the exporter or broker commonly works from a commercial invoice, packing list, transport booking/waybill and accurate goods description, quantity, value and origin details. The customs declaration and any permits or product-specific documents depend on the actual goods and export arrangement. We can help confirm the order documents with your forwarder; the exporter/broker should verify the current filing requirements before shipment.

What happens during import customs at my destination?

The importer of record or its customs broker normally prepares the import entry using the commercial invoice, packing list, transport document and destination-required information. The goods may need tariff classification, origin/value declarations, permits or other product documents; customs may review documents or inspect the shipment. Duties, taxes, broker fees and delivery charges depend on the destination and the confirmed trade term. Ask your local broker to confirm requirements for your exact model and market.

Does an express courier shipment still go through import customs?

Yes. Courier service does not remove import clearance. The courier or its broker may coordinate the entry, but the recipient/importer may need to provide tax or importer details, confirm the goods description, and pay duties, taxes or clearance fees before delivery. The exact process and included service vary by destination and courier.

Can drinkware containing a battery be shipped by air?

Tell us before requesting a freight quote. The shipper needs the battery chemistry and model, watt-hours or other required rating, whether it is installed or packed separately, and supporting test and packing documents such as the applicable UN 38.3 test summary. Airline, carrier, route and destination rules can differ, and some services may not accept a particular configuration. The carrier or a qualified dangerous-goods forwarder must confirm acceptance and packing instructions.

Is cargo insurance included in EXW, FOB or DDP?

Do not assume it is included. EXW and FOB do not by themselves require the seller to buy cargo insurance; under DDP, the seller bears delivery risk to the named place, but the agreed quotation and insurance cover still need checking. Ask who places the policy, what value and risks it covers, the deductible and how to report damage. If you arrange the main carriage, ask your forwarder about cover for that route.

What should I send to get a useful logistics comparison?

Please share the destination country and postcode, model and estimated quantity, requested delivery date, carton or pallet details if available, whether you have a forwarder or broker, and whether you can receive goods at a named China warehouse. We can then confirm which terms and routes can be quoted and what each option includes. A final quote should list the handover point, customs scope, duties/taxes, destination delivery and any excluded charges.
